The Multicultural Resource Center was born from a direct result of student activism. Prior to 2012, the interprofessional student and staff collective known as the Health Unity Board organized to foster community building and outreach. With the support of UCSF stakeholders, they advocated for a physical space to support the needs of historically underrepresented students and allies.
In collaboration with students, Dr. Joseph Castro (Vice Chancellor, Student Academic Affairs; 2006 – 2013) and Dr. Renée Navarro (Vice Chancellor, Office of Diversity and Outreach; 2010 – present) dedicated a physical space in Millberry Union West. Proclaimed by San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, on October 24th 2012, the Multicultural Resource Center became official haven for historically underrepresented UCSF trainees and allies.
