Cracking the Codes with Dr. Shakti Butler

Cole Hall

We are pleased to host Dr. Shakti Butler who will facilitate a deep dialogue and film screening of "Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequity". This community event will take place on October 8, 2013 at Cole Hall on Parnassus Campus from 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM.

Dr. Butler directed “The Way Home: Women Talk About Race in America” and “Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible”. In her new film and learning program, Dr. Butler asks America to talk about the causes and consequences of systemic inequity. With moving stories from racial justice leaders including Amer Ahmed, Michael Benitez, Barbie-Danielle DeCarlo, Joy DeGruy, Harley Eagle, Ericka Huggins, Yuko Kodama, Peggy McIntosh, Rinku Sen, Tillman Smith and Tim Wise.

This film is designed to deepen and shift the framing of racial disparities in this country. The current conversation is not only shallow, but actually harmful.  We continue to primarily focus on individuals, when institutional and structural inequities are the bigger problem.
