The month of May marks Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) heritage month in the United States, and the Office of Opportunity and Outreach (O&O) is proud to join in on the celebration. All are welcome to join.
May was selected to celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month to commemorate the arrival of the first known Japanese immigrant, John Majiro to the US on May 7, 1843 and honor the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869 – that 20,000 Chinese workers labored to build and were an essential part of the railroad. Throughout US history, AANHPI have made lasting and impactful contributions across diverse areas of American life—from science and medicine to literature, the arts, sports, politics, activism, and law.
At UCSF, we have thoughtfully curated a series of events designed to bring people together in meaningful and uplifting ways. From storytelling on May 19 to spaces for learning, wellness, and connection, this month is all about creating opportunities to be seen, heard, and in community with one another. Whether you attend one event or join us throughout the month, there’s something for everyone - and moments to spark inspiration, build relationships, and celebrate culture! We hope you’ll take part in making this month meaningful and memorable.
